Our Name

The Bindi Project was named for the "bindi" - a forehead decoration worn by many women and girls in India and other parts of South Asia. Derived from the Sanskrit word "bindu," meaning "dot," a bindi is traditionally a dot of red color applied in the center of the forehead - the area considered by many to be the sixth chakra, the seat of "concealed wisdom." It is said to retain energy, strengthen concentration, and protect against demons or bad luck. In this way the bindi represents the dignity inherent in every daughter.
